You can find out who called you by using reverse phone lookup tools, caller ID apps, web searches, and messaging platforms that reveal registered user info. Why is this useful to know? You may think it’s a robocall or telemarketer, but what if it’s a long-lost contact or a real opportunity that can be missed?
The range of options of who might be on the other end is vast, but so are the tools to uncover the unknown caller. In this article, we have compiled several methods that will help you identify who is trying to reach out to you and who this number is registered to with minimal risk and maximum information.

The information and tools provided in this article are for informational purposes only. While HeyLocate aims to recommend reliable resources, we do not guarantee the accuracy or availability of third-party services.
Users are responsible for using any phone lookup tools or services ethically and in full compliance with local laws and privacy regulations. These tools should not be used to harass, stalk, or invade the privacy of others. Always ensure that your actions respect individual rights and legal boundaries.

Method 2. Google the Number
Another step that you can take is browsing the number across the web. Yes, the amount of info out there is huge and not all of it is accurate, but this might be the quickest and most accessible way to get your answers.
Additionally, a lot of countries have their own so-called scam databases. If the number is there, this website will likely pop up among the first ones.

Note: For better results, add “who called me”, e.g., “2056062933 who called me”.
If you use Google Pixel or have installed the Google Phone app, you can look up an unknown number from your call list. For this to work, set the Phone by Google as the default.

Then, to look up an unknown number, follow these steps:
- Open the Phone app.
- Select Recents Tab and choose a number.
- Tap the LookUp option to find the information.

Method 3. Use Reverse Phone Lookup Services
Moving on to the next method, we recommend trying reverse phone lookup services. These are dedicated platforms that search through phone number databases to find who the number is registered to.
The most popular options out there include Whitepages, BeenVerified, and Spokeo. I decided to give Whitepages a go to illustrate how such services work and test their effectiveness.
- First, go to https://www.whitepages.com.
- Enter the phone number you want to learn about.
- Then, you’ll get the data available for the number you wanted to check out.

In my case, I didn’t find out the name of a caller, but Whitepages showed that it was a VoIP number from California with a low spam risk. Still, sometimes even this info can be a considerable push for further research.
Note: Our testing of the paid reverse phone lookup service, Intelius, did give results with a name.
Overall, the process of usage for this kind of service is similar, but slight differences can occur.
Method 4. Use Caller ID Apps
These apps promise to help you verify unknown callers before responding, block spam, and sometimes even look up numbers in the users’ database.
Note: Some Android models have an in-built spam-detection option. If it applies to you, you will be notified about potential spam call status in real time by default; therefore, downloading Caller ID apps may be unnecessary for you.
To check whether your phone has this feature, go to the Phone app > Settings > look for options like Caller ID/Spam detection/Block/report spam numbers.
Basic steps in using third-party Caller ID apps include:
- installing the app and registering with your phone number;
- granting necessary permissions and starting to get enhanced info.
I tested the Truecaller app, and the procedure was just as we’ve mentioned above.

I chose the basic (free) plan, enabled all the required settings.

However, when an unknown caller tried to contact me, I received no data about it. The point is that Truecaller’s database is crowdsourced — it relies on user data and public sources. The app gathers phone number information from the web and users’ phone books, provided they have granted access.
When I searched for the number manually inside the app, I only found out its country of origin and operator.

If you’re interested in a detailed review of the Truecaller app, we’ve got you covered!
Note: Additionally, we tested a similar app called Hiya, but it showed poor performance; thus, we can’t recommend it.
Method 5. Register the Number in Messaging Apps
This method of checking the number’s owner is not immediately obvious to many users, yet it can be surprisingly informative. Here’s how you should go about this method:
-
Save the number that you want to check in your contacts. It’s better to give them a name that will help you identify this contact quickly (e.g., “Number Checking”).
-
Choose your messenger (WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber), open the “create a new chat” window (with a + or similar sign), and search for the contact name you wanted to check.
There’s no need to text or call the person; tap the number to see User Info and who the number is registered to. Look for photos, usernames, or any other hints that can come in handy to detect the caller.
I checked my caller, and it turned out that they didn’t have any account in messengers that I have registered with this phone number. However, you can be way luckier!
Got their photo? Check how to find someone with a picture. Found their username? Check it on various social media platforms.
Method 6. Hide Your Number to Call Back Anonymously
The best way to know who called you is to call them back and ask. However, if you want to stay anonymous in the same way they are, you can contact them using No Caller ID.
Both iOS and Android devices support this feature, and we provide instructions for each system.
iPhone:
-
Open the Settings app on your iPhone and go to the Phone tab in the Apps section (at the very end of the page).
-
Look for Show my caller ID, tap it, and disable this feature.
Note: some phone carriers don’t allow hiding your caller ID; if it applies to you, then the toggler will be blocked, and it will be impossible to move it (just like in the picture below); so make sure to check the official website of your operator for more information.

Android:
-
Open the Phone app and the More options icon (three vertical dots).
-
Tap Settings and choose Supplementary Services.
-
Tap Show your caller ID and select Never.
Now you can embrace your privacy!
What Else Can Be Done?
If none of the options worked out for you, there are still some small steps you can take:
- search the number on social media: some businesses often post their numbers on social media profiles and bios;
- ask in online communities: people on Reddit, Quora, and other digital forums could’ve come across this number or can give you advice on what actions to perform;
- check your voicemail or texts: there is a chance that the caller left something there;
- check the organizations/people you’ve contacted lately: if you’ve recently applied for a job or contacted a specialist on some matter, it might be one of them.
Note: If the unwanted calls persist, consider contacting either your mobile service provider or the caller’s carrier to report the issue. In cases of harassment, threats, or repeated disturbances, report the matter to your local law enforcement agency.
Conclusion
In this article, we explored multiple ways to find out who called you from an unknown number. The methods that I would highlight are reverse phone lookup services and registering the number in messengers. They are useful, quick, and effective, yet may require payments or more effort than expected.
⚠️ Remember to stay cautious, especially when dealing with suspicious or persistent calls. At the end of the day, protecting your privacy and peace of mind is what matters most.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Yes, you can Google a phone number to see if it’s linked to any public information, such as business listings, social media profiles, or scam reports.
You can identify a caller for free by searching the number online or checking messaging apps. Caller ID apps may also offer basic free info.
Some smartphones and apps (like Google Phone, Truecaller, or Hiya) use external databases to display names for unknown numbers, especially businesses. However, if the caller’s number isn’t publicly listed or widely reported, or if your region has privacy restrictions (like in parts of Europe), the name might not appear.
Use online phone books and reverse phone lookup tools. Similarly, try Caller ID apps that compile the names of phone number owners based on their user database.
