You need to send your child a supervision request, and they need to accept it. Tap on Get Started and select your kid from your following list, then tap Invite.

If you and your teen aren’t following each other on Instagram, you can share a link with an invitation to send them.

Thereafter, a child will have 48 hours to approve the supervision request. Still, you can decline an invitation by tapping “Cancel invite”.

When a child receives the supervision request, they can see what a parent is allowed to.

Once a teen accepts the invitation, your accounts will be linked.

The Supervision settings allow parents to:

• see who your child is following and who is following them;
• control how much time they spend on the app and set time limits;
• see accounts that your teen has blocked when you tap blocked accounts;
• know when they start following someone new;

What can parents see with Instagram supervision?

After I got a push notification that my daughter accepted the invitation, I went to see my options and saw that I could only see her settings, which she may change with my approval.

For example, I could see that her account is public but could not make it private or change any other settings for privacy.

I could only see their connections and set up notifications for new followers and following.

I could see the blocked accounts section but could not block someone by myself.

Set Time Limits

Time limits prevent your child from accessing their Instagram account at certain times of the day or on specific days.

To set time limits:

1. Go to Settings and tap Supervision.
   
2. Select Family Center and choose the account that you want to supervise.
   
3. Click Manage Time Limits. First, turn off Daily Time Limit to set a daily time limit. Set a time and tap Set.
   
4. Set Scheduled Break by tapping Manage Time Limit and choose Edit under Scheduled Breaks. Now, set the start time, end time, and days. Then tap Set to confirm.
   

These are the basic inbuilt Instagram parental controls. It means that with Instagram supervision, parents can only see a child’s IG settings (but not change them) and control time spent in the app.

Control Messages and Story Replies

In Message controls, you can set up who can send message requests and add your child to group chats.

In Story replies, choose to allow replies from followers your teen follows back, or don’t allow at all.

Remove the Followers You Don’t Want

If there are followers that you don’t want to engage with your child’s account, you can remove them from their profile. Open your child’s profile page and tap followers. You will see the list of followers. All you need to do is tap Remove next to the follower.

Control Their Location Sharing

With the new location map feature introduced in mid-2025 in the USA (with more global availability soon), parents can decide whether their teen has access to location sharing on the Instagram location map. If enabled, you’ll be able to receive a notification if your teen starts sharing their location and see who they are sharing their location with.

It’s an important feature to manage, as if your teen uses location sharing, their location is updated whenever they open the app or return to the app if it’s been running in the background. All their friends (or selected ones) will constantly see where they are.
