Spokeo is a legitimate, long-running business and definitely not a scam. It has been BBB-accredited since 2009 and holds an A- rating. The minus reflects a high volume of billing-related complaints, though Spokeo does respond to them consistently.

That said, “legitimate” and “without caveats” are two different things, and there are important disclosures to understand before using it.

Legal standing: Spokeo states clearly that it is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). This means you cannot legally use its data to make decisions about credit, employment, tenant screening, or housing.

Your privacy as a user: Spokeo admits it collects certain types of user-generated data and shares it with third parties. This includes information you provide when creating an account, your search history, GPS data, and IP address. If that concerns you, review Spokeo’s privacy policy carefully before signing up.

How Does Spokeo Work?

Spokeo searches billions of public records to return information based on your query. To use it, you need to create an account.

You can sign up directly through the burger menu in the upper-right corner, where you can choose a subscription plan.

Alternatively (and this is the better path if you want the trial), start any search first, and the $0.95 seven-day trial offer will appear at the end of the results flow. This trial provides you with access to 100 reports over seven days, which is more than enough to evaluate the service thoroughly.

Note: You may receive additional offers when placing an order. We recommend considering them carefully because they are much cheaper than buying them afterwards.

After that, you can log in with your account credentials and access the main features on the Spokeo homepage.

Account Settings

Spokeo’s user interface is quite intuitive. Tap the burger menu in the upper-right corner and choose Account to see information, including how much trial time and reports are left.

You can change your email or password here, make it more secure with 2-step verification, upgrade your subscription, and turn on/off marketing emails.

There is also a Get Help link that takes you to the Help Center, where you can find answers to frequently asked questions.

Main Features and Their Effectiveness

The main search interface is clean and organized around four search types: name, email, phone number, and address. Below the search bar, the dashboard surfaces your recent activity through My Recent Searches (for name searches) and My Reports (for phone lookups).

There are also Suggested Profiles based on your prior lookups: Spokeo suggests some people you may be interested in. We didn’t quite understand how these individuals were related to our searches, and the service didn’t provide any explanation. Nevertheless, a notification bell updates when new related profiles are found.

A blog section called Discover the Truth with Spokeo covers practical use cases like fraud prevention, safe online dating, reconnecting with old friends, and more examples of how you can use the service. There are also the FAQs section and Spokeo Member Success Stories.

Name Search

After entering a name, Spokeo asks you to narrow results by state, metropolitan area, and city — a useful step given how many people share the same name. If you skip this, you can scroll through report previews showing full name, age, related locations, and associated people.

The filtering options are genuinely useful. You can narrow results by location, age range, contact information, or family members.

There is also an Advanced Search option that lets you input everything you know upfront to bypass multiple refinement steps.

A specific person’s report contains a lot of information. We found precise current and past addresses, four related phone numbers, and an email address. Scrolling further revealed family members, a social profile match, and a court record entry.

The phone and email details added meaningful context: each phone entry indicated whether the line was a landline or wireless, active or disconnected, and when it was last found in the database for that person — useful for identifying the most current contact.

The email was labeled as commercial.

Address details within name reports were notably thorough. There was a map of the person’s moves over time, along with property specifics: estimated value, sale year, living square footage, bedroom and bathroom count, and year built.

Opening the full property report added tax history, past owners and occupants, safety data including property crime statistics, and nearby registered sex offenders, plus school and neighborhood information. It is the same report you can get with the address lookup feature.

You can tap and dive into any new name mentioned to investigate further. Impressive, right?

Family entries showed people linked by shared address, with names, ages, birth years, and marital status — each clickable for a full profile.

The social report matched a Facebook profile via email (not just by name), which is a stronger signal of accuracy.

Court records, however, are locked behind the premium tier at $29.95/month and include criminal, birth, census, military records, and PDF downloads.

The personal section listed the month and year of birth, while a general interests block drew on household-level marketing data.

Wealth data was estimated from property value and referenced income and investment information.

Work and education fields were empty in our tested report — this is not uncommon, as these fields depend heavily on what the subject has made publicly available online.

Spokeo is in our top list of the best email lookup services. Its email search returned the possible owner’s name with a photo, current and previous places of work, education history, and links to social profiles, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Flickr.

Email search works globally because email addresses are not country-specific. However, when we searched for email addresses belonging to people outside the US, results were minimal — typically a profile photo at most.

The Spokeo reverse phone lookup form accepts 10-digit US numbers. The service returned the owner’s name, city, and a structured set of phone details: line type, carrier, validity, portability, and a phone reputation score — the last of which is useful for identifying potential spam or fraud numbers.

Opening the owner’s profile from a phone result produces the same comprehensive report structure as a name search.

Address search returned very comprehensive and structured property data: estimated value, bed and bath count, square footage, current owners and occupants, and an interactive map.

Tax history, safety data, and neighborhood context were also available by scrolling further.

Username Search

Username search is accessible through Account Settings > Search List.

During our testing across Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Threads, Spokeo successfully found matching social media profiles. This is a useful feature for verifying online identities or researching an unknown username.

You can pay with PayPal, a debit or credit card, Venmo, or Google Pay.

Note that additional fees may apply for certain types of information beyond the base membership or report, such as for court, criminal, historical, birth, census, and military records, with a $29.95 premium monthly subscription.

There is also a useful account feature: you can set an email reminder before your next billing date to avoid unexpected renewals.

How to Cancel a Spokeo Subscription

To cancel your Spokeo membership, contact customer support or do it yourself through your account. Scroll down to Manage Your Account, and tap on the “contact form” link. Choose “I would like to terminate my membership.”

Spokeo says, “You will continue to enjoy all premium content and benefits until the end of the current payment period.” However, in our testing, cancelling the trial revoked access immediately — not at the end of the 7-day period as the policy states. Factor this into your decision.

Once cancelled, Spokeo sends a confirmation email and stops all future billing. At the same time, you may get a promo offer with a discount of up to 60%.

Refund Policy

Spokeo’s refund policy is strict and worth understanding clearly before you enter your payment details.

According to Spokeo’s official payment policy, all sales of premium content are final. All membership plans are prepaid and non-refundable, regardless of the billing period — monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual.

When you cancel, your subscription stops renewing, but you are not refunded or prorated for any unused time.

That said, Spokeo’s FAQ does note that users who are unsatisfied can contact Customer Care to request a refund, and BBB complaint records show Spokeo does occasionally issue refunds in specific circumstances — particularly for billing confusion around trials. However, this is discretionary, not guaranteed.

You can opt out of Spokeo listings through their Do Not Sell My Info page. However, as the service collects information from other public sources, opting out of Spokeo will not remove your data from its original source.

Furthermore, you may have multiple listings on Spokeo. Therefore, you should opt out by marking each report that mentions you and checking for new listings after updates. The process is tedious and must be repeated for every listing — a significant friction point for privacy-conscious users.
