What is Find My?

Find My is a feature by Apple that helps users locate lost or stolen iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches or even AirPods. It helps users trace their devices and take the required location-tracking measures whenever needed. Previously called Find My iPhone, the app was unified with the Find My Friends feature and now has also a location sharing feature.

Features of Find My

The Find My App provides several functions for locating devices, finding friends location, and even tracking third-party Bluetooth devices and accessories.

People
Through Find My app, users can send their Apple device contacts their location, either indefinitely or for a particular period. The app shows real-time locations on the map, with compass arrow for easier navigating on iPhone 15 and above. It also provides notifications on arrivals and departures at particular sites.
Devices
Find My allows users to locate their Apple devices, which include iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and AirPods. Users can play a sound on a lost device, even in silent mode, or use Lost Mode to lock the device and display the custom messages remotely. It is also possible to erase device data and get the activation lock to guarantee the personal information safety.
Items
Apple has enriched Find My, which can monitor third-party Bluetooth devices and accessories through the Find My Network Accessory Program. They can link supportive accessories to a key or wallet and track their position via the app.

Furthermore, AirTag, a device that uses ultra-wideband technology for accurate locating and can be attached to items and viewed through the Find My app.

Privacy Concerns and Safety Measures

Using of Find My App can be considered as a risk to other people’s privacy. To tackle this challenge, Apple has implemented safety features such as fine-tuned location-sharing permissions, geofence and tracking notifications and alerts for unknown device tracking.
