There are many mobile phone location tracking options that do not require software installation. These services are typically web-based and can determine a phone’s location using only the phone number.
With the average smartphone containing around 40 apps, installing additional tracking software may lead to performance issues such as lag or crashes. Moreover, it could increase the risk of exposure to malware or unauthorized access from malicious software. So, to help users avoid potential troubles, we have found multiple solutions without downloads. They are quick, available, and effective.
Regardless of your aim, these tools can come in handy either for occasional or everyday use. We hope that with this guide you will be able to make the most balanced and suitable choice.

The information provided in this article is intended solely for educational and informational purposes. Tracking a phone’s location without the explicit consent of the device owner may be illegal and violate privacy laws in many jurisdictions. Always ensure you have the legal right and proper authorization before using any tracking method. HeyLocate does not endorse or promote any unauthorized or unlawful use of tracking tools. Method 1. Brand-Made Tracking Systems
Most smartphones come with native tracking systems developed by the manufacturer. They are embedded into the operating system and require no additional app installation as long as the feature was previously enabled on the device. Here are the instructions based on the type of your device:
iPhone:
Apple offers Find My app, a built-in feature available through all iOS devices. It lets you track your own iPhone and those of other people as well. Generally, there are two ways of using it:
- through the app (more common one);
- through the website (applies if a user needs to find a lost device or has any problems using the app).
To try it, find and open the app on your phone. There, you will see the location of all of your devices or devices connected to your system (the process is automatic, once an iPhone or AirPods or any other Apple gadget has been connected to yours, it will be memorized forever, unless you remove it manually).

Tap People to share your location with someone, or see whether people shared their location with you.
If you’re facing issues with app functionality, we strongly encourage you to contact Apple Support. Meanwhile, use the web version. Here you go:
- Visit iCloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID credentials or phone number.
Note: to fasten the process of signing in, you can use the passkey. It will be offered to you automatically. If it’s not, it means that this function is not available for you or the system doesn’t have enough data. - Look for Find My app icon, then tap it.
After that, you should see a list of devices that have been connected to your device and some information once you click one of them. Additionally, you can mark them as lost and make them play a sound to see if they are located nearby.

Samsung:
Samsung’s proprietary tool is tailored for Galaxy devices and is the best for finding your own lost Samsung gadget. There are several ways to make use of it:
1. With SmartThings & SmartThings Find app:
SmartThings is Samsung’s smart device management app, and it can be seen as the newer, unified version of Find My Mobile. Inside it, there’s a feature called SmartThings Find, which lets you track all your Samsung devices.
Note: Although available on most Android devices, it is not pre-installed on older or budget models and requires downloading from the Play Market.
If this option works for your gadget, follow these steps:
- Identify and open the SmartThings app on your phone.
- Tap on SmartThings Find (it may be in the Life tab).
- If the feature is enabled, a map should appear, showing the location of your Samsung devices.

Alternatively, you can use its website:
- Visit https://smartthingsfind.samsung.com/login and log in with the Samsung account linked to the phone.
- Select your device and get the necessary information.

2. With Samsung Find app:
- Open the app and sign in with your Samsung account.
- Select the Devices tab and choose the gadget you want to find.

Note: Similarly to SmartThings, Samsung Find is only preloaded on Galaxy S24/S24+ and newer with One UI 6.1+, so check carefully if it applies to your case.
Xiaomi/Redmi/POCO:
Find Device is Mi Cloud’s tracking system. It’s similar to the above-mentioned ones in its functions and usage procedure:
- Open https://i.mi.com/ and sign in with your Mi Account data.
- Click on Find Device in the dashboard and view the map with your device’s marked location.

! Before you can use it remotely, the feature must be enabled on the target phone:
Open Settings > Tap Xiaomi Account (top of the settings screen) > Sign in with your Mi Account or create one if needed > Tap Xiaomi Cloud or Mi Cloud > Scroll to Find device and make sure the switch is on.

Note: If the Find device is disabled or the Mi Account is not signed in, tracking won’t work.
Google Pixel:
Google Find Hub (Find My Device) is a tracking service which relies on your Google Account to perform:
- Go to https://www.google.com/android/find/.
- Sign in with the same Google Account used on the Pixel.
- As in all previous services, you’ll see a map and your phone “located” on it.

Huawei/Honor:
Find Device (Find My Phone) is Huawei’s official tracking tool tied to your Huawei ID and works through the Huawei Cloud platform. With its help, you can track your phone via any browser:
- Visit https://cloud.huawei.com/.
- Sign in with your Huawei ID, click on Find Device and get the location of your device.
Oppo/Realme:
HeyTap Cloud is the cloud service platform used by OPPO, Realme, and OnePlus (in some regions). It allows users to back up data, sync information between devices, and importantly track lost or stolen phones.
To find your device remotely, you’ll use the HeyTap Cloud website:
- Log in with the same HeyTap ID used on the phone.
- From the dashboard, click on Find My Phone or Find Device. You’ll see a map showing the phone’s current or last known location.
Note: If you have any other Android phone, Google Find hub is your tool for tracking a lost or stolen device.
Method 2. Google Maps
Another way to determine the location of your phone or someone’s device, no matter the brand or system, is through the Google Maps App. Here’s how you should go about tracking own location history:
- Open the app and click on your profile icon in the right corner (make sure you’re signed in to the right account).
- A menu will show up with the Your Timeline option. Click on it. From there, you can monitor the cell phone by going back in time and seeing where it was last marked.
Note: I thought that my settings allowed for location recording, but it turned out that location access for Maps needs to be set to Always, while in my case it was set to While Using the App. Do not to repeat my mistake and check your settings in advance.

To track someone’s phone, ask them to share their geoposition through the Location Sharing option and view it on the app.
Method 3. Carrier’s Tracking Service
Carrier tracking services allow you to locate phones linked to your mobile plan, typically through a website or mobile app. In our case, the website is what we need!
Note: an app is not required if your carrier supports basic tracking using the SIM and network. Some features (like real-time GPS) may need an app to perform. Check the official websites for more information.
If this is a yes for you, follow this instruction:
- Log in to your carrier’s website (eg. verizon.com, att.com, vodafone.com).
- Go to the Family, Security, or Device Management section.
- Open the Location Tracking feature. It may be called Find My Device, Smart Family, or Secure Family.
- Select the phone number you want to track (must be part of your plan).
- Now you should be able to view the phone’s location on the map.
- Location may be approximate if GPS is off.
- You may get recent locations or alerts.
Before using this method, check if you meet the requirements:
- You must be the account owner (parent or manager);
- The phone you want to track must be on your mobile plan.
Method 4. Phone Number Tracker
Another way that you can try out is online phone number trackers. As you can tell from the name, they allow you to locate a phone using just the number, often by sending a location request via SMS. These tools are widely used for personal safety or keeping track of family members. The general guide to this type of service can be found below:
- Go to a phone tracking service website (e.g. Detectico, Scannero, GEOfinder).
- Type in the number of the phone you want to locate (including the country code, if needed).
- The platform will create a unique link that, when clicked, will collect the target phone’s location data.
- Send the link to the target either through the platform or copy and send it manually via SMS or another messaging app.
- Wait for the person to click the link and view the phone’s location.
Note: The tracking only works once the recipient taps the link, this gives their consent and activates tracking.
An outstanding example of this method is Detectico. I gave it a go, and it offered a user-friendly experience with no complicated technical steps required. The tracking process is smooth and intuitive, from entering the phone number to seeing the live location after the link is clicked. Highly recommended!

Method 5. Social Media & Messengers
Many social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat, and messenger apps like WhatsApp or Telegram allow their users to share their location in chats. Apple’s iMessage even lets you request someone’s location without sharing yours. How to do it? Here’ is the common way:
- Open the chat with the person whose location you want to see.
- Tap on the clip or plus icon and choose Location to share it. The other person needs to do the same for you to see where they are.
- You will be able to see their location on a map for the time they decide to share it.

Method 6. IMEI Tracker
IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. It’s a unique identifier used to distinguish every phone or cellular-enabled device. You can find your phone’s IMEI by dialing *#06#.

However, for safety reasons, IMEI tracking is not available for regular phone users. Instead, you should contact the local authorities and ask them to locate and block your device (if lost or stolen). Our testing showed that IMEI trackers give only technical information about your device (brand, model, color, battery type, etc).
Method 7. IP Tracker
The last but not least way to locate a device that we suggest is by tracking its IP address. You send a link that, once clicked, provides the IP tracker with the device’s approximate location and IP details.
The process is straightforward:
- Select a tracking website such as IPlocation.net or Grabify, which allows you to generate a custom link that appears as a normal message.
- Share this link via SMS, WhatsApp, or any other messaging app.
- Wait for the recipient to click the link. Once tapped, the website collects data including the IP address, approximate location, device type, and more.

Note: This method requires the user’s interaction with the link, and using it without their consent may infringe on privacy laws. If you already know the target device’s IP address, you can use services like KeyCDN tools to obtain related information based on that IP.
Conclusion
To sum up, tracking a cell phone’s location without installing additional software is not only possible but also practical, thanks to the variety of solutions available today. Personally I prefer using Find My and Detectico, since these two options are the least time-consuming and the most straightforward.
It is important to remember that most of these methods require prior setup or user consent and rely on an active internet connection.
Additionally, always ensure that any tracking activities comply with applicable laws and respect individual privacy rights. By understanding the strengths and limitations of each method, you can make an informed choice that balances convenience, effectiveness, and ethical considerations.
At HeyLocate, we encourage responsible use of technology to help users stay safe and connected.
